Find the slope of the line containing the following points.
1) (-6,-3) and (2,-1)
2) (4,7) and (12,2)
3) (-2,-3) and (-7,-12)
Use the zero method to find the x and y intercepts of the line with the following equations.
4) 5x - 4y = 40
5) y = 0.5x - 2
What is slope intercept form?
When graphing linear equations, arranging the variables and constant terms of a linear equation in the order y = mx + b makes graphing a breeze. Equations written in this order are called slope intercept form.
Learning Objectives
Solve a linear equation for y.
Graph equations in slope intercept form.
Lesson Notes
Slope Intercept Form
y=mx+b
An equation in this form may look like this
y=4x+5
Things to remember about slope intercept form:
The letter m is the slope of the line. If it isn't a fraction put it over 1 before graphing.
The letter b represents the y intercept, or the point that the line will cross the y axis.
The x and the y represent the variables in the problem.
To graph the line y = 4x + 5 notice that b = 5 and m = 4
Step 1. start by graphing the y intercept, that's b, by making a dot on the y axis at 5. Remember that the y axis is the one that goes up and down.
Step 2. From the y intercept use the slope to rise and run to find the next point. Notice the green dots rise 4 and run to the right 1.
Step 3. Draw a line through the two points to make a line.
Leave fractions for slope as improper (you still need to simplify fractions)
